What the milestone check looks at
The milestone check is a free two minute screening that compares what your child is doing right now against milestones most children reach by their age. It is not a diagnosis. It is a starting point, built to help you decide whether it is worth talking to someone. The questions are grouped around the areas a speech-language pathologist or occupational therapist would ask about first:
Communication
First words, putting words together, following directions, and how easily unfamiliar people understand your child.
Social and emotional
Responding to their name, back and forth play, showing feelings, and interest in other children.
Thinking and play
Problem solving, pretend play, and early skills like colors, counting, and simple instructions.
Movement and self-care
Sitting, walking, using hands for small things, and everyday routines like feeding and dressing.
Milestone ranges are wide, and children do not develop on one schedule. Two children the same age can look very different and both be perfectly typical. The questions here are adapted from the milestone checklists published by the CDC’s Learn the Signs. Act Early. program, which set each milestone at a level at least 75 percent of children are expected to reach by that age.
What your result means, and what it does not
A result that says your child looks on track does not rule anything out, and a result that flags something does not mean your child has a delay or a diagnosis. Only a licensed clinician can determine that, through a proper pediatric therapy evaluation. What a two minute screening can do is tell you whether the thing you have quietly been wondering about is worth a conversation.
You do not need a diagnosis to ask a question
Parents often wait, either because someone told them to give it time, or because they are not sure they are allowed to ask without a referral. You are. If your instinct says something is harder for your child than it should be, that instinct is worth acting on. Waiting is the one thing that is difficult to undo.
What happens after you take it
You see your result straight away, with a plain explanation of what it suggests and what a sensible next step looks like. If it makes sense to talk, that next step is a free 15 minute consultation with a licensed pediatric therapist. It is a conversation, not an evaluation, and there is no obligation. If we do not think your child needs therapy, we will tell you so.

Common questions about the milestone check
Is the milestone check a diagnosis?
No, the milestone check is not a diagnosis. The milestone check is an educational screening based on the CDC’s milestone checklists, and it cannot tell you whether your child has a delay. Only a licensed clinician can determine that, through a proper evaluation. What it can do is help you decide whether what you are noticing is worth a conversation with a professional.
How long does the milestone check take?
The milestone check takes about two minutes. You choose your child’s age, answer roughly ten quick questions about how they communicate, play, and move, and see your result right away. Your answers stay in your browser and are not saved or sent to anyone.
What ages does the milestone check cover?
The check covers children from 2 months through 5 years, which matches the ages of the CDC’s milestone checklists. Therapy Clubhouse works with children and teens from birth through age 18, so if your child is older, the better starting point is a free 15 minute consultation about what you are noticing at home or at school.
What should I do if the check flags a milestone?
Take a breath first: one flagged milestone does not mean something is wrong, and it is not a diagnosis. The CDC’s advice is simply not to wait. Share what you noticed with your child’s pediatrician, or call or text Therapy Clubhouse at (805) 702-3427 for a free 15 minute consultation with a licensed pediatric therapist. If we do not think your child needs therapy, we will tell you so.
Tell us what you are noticing
A licensed therapist reads every message, not an assistant, and replies within one business day. The consultation is free, takes about 15 minutes, and there is no obligation.

The milestone check is educational only. It is not a diagnosis, medical advice, or a substitute for an evaluation by a licensed clinician. If you have concerns about your child’s health or development, talk with your child’s pediatrician.
