A child who talks constantly may still find conversation hard

Parents may not realize that conversation skills are part of speech and language.

The child has an enormous vocabulary. They can lecture you for twenty minutes about the thing they love. Adults describe them as articulate, precocious, maybe a bit intense. And yet friendships are hard, group work goes badly, and conversations end without either person quite knowing why.

What is difficult here is not words. It is the machinery underneath a conversation: reading whether the other person is still interested, repairing a misunderstanding, taking a turn and then giving it back, adjusting how you speak depending on who is listening, understanding that a raised eyebrow changed the meaning of the sentence.

Social communication is part of speech-language pathology. A child's fluent vocabulary can make a difficulty there easy to miss.

Why this surfaces at middle school in Studio City

The way middle school is set up can make social communication challenges easier to see.

In elementary school, one teacher can hold the whole picture of your child. Walter Reed Middle School had over fifteen hundred students in the 2025-26 school year. Each teacher may see your child for one period a day, and the social world can shift.

In a small, familiar, adult-scaffolded elementary, a child with weak conversational skills can be carried by a stable friendship group and a teacher who quietly manages the seating. Remove both at once and the difficulty can become visible.

If you have wondered about your child's conversation skills, you are welcome to talk with us about support before your child starts middle school.

Other reasons a family might reach out

  • A toddler well short of roughly fifty words and early two-word combinations around age two
  • Speech you follow easily that teachers and other adults do not
  • A child who answers by repeating the last word of your question back to you
  • Effortful, blocked or tense speech, particularly where the child has started avoiding words
  • Comprehension that looks stronger than it is, because the daily routine is predictable
  • A child whose written work is far weaker than their talking suggests it should be

How getting started works

A free 15-minute call in which you describe what you are seeing and we tell you honestly whether an evaluation is warranted. The answer may be that it is not.

Then, if it is, an evaluation in your home within 3 business days of the call. It takes about 60 to 90 minutes. You get a written report you can keep, share with your pediatrician, or take to a school meeting.

If therapy is recommended, a therapy plan comes with the report.

In-home, and when telehealth is the better call

We work where the skills are used. For conversational and social communication work in particular, that matters, because the skills have to hold up with real people in real situations.

Telehealth can suit school-age articulation and fluency work, and it can keep therapy going in a week that would otherwise be canceled. Studio City is in our home-visit area.

Under three

If your child is under three, you can contact the regional center that serves your address to ask about Early Start. Eligibility can rest on a 25% delay in one or more areas of development, a combination of biomedical risk factors, or an established risk condition.

The edges of what we do

We do not provide applied behavior analysis, behavioral therapy or counseling, music therapy, or nutrition services, and we do not diagnose autism, ADHD or any other condition. We describe what we observe, put it in writing, and refer onward where that is right.

Your speech-language pathologist

Studio City speech clients work with Nita Anavim, M.S., CCC-SLP, a licensed speech-language pathologist holding the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
