Therapy Clubhouse focuses on pediatric speech-language therapy and occupational therapy, and we do not currently provide feeding therapy in-house. Because feeding challenges deserve specialized care, we partner with a trusted network of experienced pediatric feeding therapists and are glad to connect your family with the right expert — and we plan to offer feeding services directly in the future. We want to be straightforward about that, because if your child is struggling with eating, you deserve the right specialist rather than a service that is not the right fit. We are always glad to point families toward a trusted pediatric feeding specialist, and if your child also needs speech or occupational therapy, we can help with that part directly.
This page is here to give you genuinely useful information about feeding therapy, what it is, who it helps, and how to take the next step, so that even though we are not the provider, you leave with a clearer sense of where to go.
What Feeding Therapy Is and Who It Helps
Feeding therapy is specialized support for children who have difficulty with eating and drinking. It is provided by professionals with specific training in feeding, and it addresses the many reasons a child might struggle at mealtimes, from how they handle different textures, to oral-motor coordination, to the sensory and behavioral sides of eating. It is a distinct area of practice with its own expertise.
Feeding therapy can help children who are extremely selective eaters, who have trouble moving from purees to table foods, who gag or struggle with certain textures, or who find mealtimes stressful and overwhelming. The goal is to help eating become safer, more comfortable, and less stressful for the whole family.
Every child has foods they love and foods they push away, and ordinary picky eating is a normal part of growing up. What sets feeding difficulties apart is the intensity, the persistence, and the way they shape daily life. You might consider a feeding evaluation if you notice signs like these:
Extreme picky eating that goes well beyond typical preferences, often with strong reactions to new foods.
A very limited diet, where your child will only accept a small handful of foods and reliably refuses the rest.
Gagging, choking, or visible distress when faced with certain textures.
Real difficulty moving from purees to soft foods, or from soft foods to regular table foods.
Mealtimes that are routinely stressful, drawn out, or full of conflict for your child and your family.
Worry about your child's growth, weight, or whether they are getting enough nutrition.
If several of these feel familiar, it is worth a conversation with a professional. Feeding challenges tend to respond well to the right support, and getting started earlier is usually easier on everyone.
Your child's pediatrician is a valuable first stop, especially when eating difficulties come with any concern about growth, weight, nutrition, or health. Bring your specific observations, what your child will and will not eat, what happens at mealtimes, any gagging or choking, and how long it has been going on. Your pediatrician can rule out or address medical factors, help you understand what you are seeing, and connect you with the right feeding specialist. If swallowing safety is ever a concern, that is a reason to seek guidance promptly rather than waiting.

Developmental and communication differences are a common part of childhood. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that about 1 in 6 children ages 3–17 (17.3%) has a developmental disability, and nearly 1 in 12 (7.7%) has a disorder related to voice, speech, language, or swallowing. The CDC’s most recent data identify about 1 in 31 eight-year-olds (3.2%) with autism spectrum disorder, while the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders reports that 5–10% of children stutter and speech sound disorders affect 8–9% of young children. Across all of these areas, early speech and occupational therapy give children the best opportunity to build skills during the years when development moves fastest.
