How does OT work in Simi Valley Unified schools?
Simi Valley Unified offers OT to special education students who need it, as each student's IEP team decides. The district says school OT is about purposeful, goal-directed activities that help a student function during the school day.
School occupational therapists there assess areas such as fine motor and sensory motor skills. They may adapt a task or the setting to help a student do better.
The district also offers Extended School Year services in the summer. A student gets them when the IEP team decides they are needed to prevent a loss of skills.
Private OT can also work on home routines, such as dressing and meals. With your consent, we can coordinate with your child's school OT.
What help is there for young Simi Valley children?
Before age 3, there is Early Start. From 3 to 5, Simi Valley Unified runs a Special Education Preschool Program.
In Ventura County, Early Start is coordinated by Tri-Counties Regional Center together with school districts. We take part in Early Start as a Tri-Counties provider.
The district's preschool program is play based and language enriched. It works on social, communication, and motor skills through structured play. Private OT with us can run next to the district's program.
