A speech-language pathologist looks at receptive language, meaning what your child understands, and expressive language, meaning what they can say. They also look at speech sound production and how easily others understand your child, social communication and play, and, where it is relevant, feeding and oral-motor skills. Someone suggested your child "get evaluated." Maybe a pediatrician, maybe a preschool teacher, maybe a voice in your own head at 2am. The word sounds bigger than it is.
A pediatric therapy evaluation is a play-based assessment by a licensed speech therapist or occupational therapist. It looks at how a child talks, understands, moves, handles sensory input, and does daily tasks. You get a written report. It says whether therapy would help and where to start. It begins with a free 15-minute call. No referral or diagnosis is needed.
There is no waiting list for in-home or telehealth therapy, as of October 2026. An evaluation can begin within 3 business days of your free call. For in-home and telehealth families, a first session can be as soon as 5 days after you call. Call (805) 702-3427.
Is the evaluation the same as the free consultation?
No, and the two are easy to mix up. The free consultation is a 15-minute call with a speech or occupational therapist. It answers your questions and points you to the right next step. The evaluation is a separate, longer visit. It measures your child's skills and ends in a written report. The consultation is free. The evaluation is a clinical service, and insurance can be used for it through Village (see the cost section below).
What actually happens during a pediatric therapy evaluation?
Most of it looks like play. Your therapist spends time with you and your child. She uses standardized tools and careful watching. She asks about your concerns and your child's history. Young children can be assessed through play and familiar routines rather than at a table. That is where their real skills show up.
You are part of it, not a spectator. Expect questions about birth history, ear infections, sleep, milestones, and how your child does at home compared with school or daycare. Parents notice things a therapist would need several visits to see, so what you report counts alongside what is measured.
How long does a pediatric therapy evaluation take?
Plan on roughly one to one and a half hours. The exact length depends on your child's age, how many areas are being looked at, and how your child is doing that day. A toddler may need shorter stretches with breaks. If your child needs both a speech and an OT evaluation, those are two separate visits with two different clinicians.
What does a full pediatric evaluation include?
It depends on which discipline your child is seen for, but every evaluation combines the same three ingredients: a parent interview and case history, standardized assessments chosen for your child’s age, and structured observation of your child in activity.
An occupational therapist looks at fine motor and hand skills, handwriting and visual-motor control, gross motor coordination and body awareness, sensory processing and self-regulation, and daily living skills such as dressing, eating independently, and managing the demands of a school day. At what age can my child be evaluated?
Any age from birth through 18. It is never too early to ask the question. Is your child under 3? Families in Ventura County may qualify for a no-cost evaluation through Early Start at Tri-Counties Regional Center. Therapy Clubhouse is a contracted provider there. We can explain how a private evaluation and that route fit together.
Should we wait and see instead?
Children can grow into skills on their own timeline. No one can predict with certainty which children will. That is why speech and occupational therapists recommend an evaluation when a parent or pediatrician is worried. It replaces guessing with information. Asking costs nothing.
The CDC's advice to parents is plain: "If you're concerned about your child's development, don't wait. You know your child best." About 1 in 6 children aged 3 through 17 has a developmental disability of some kind, so you are far from alone in asking. (CDC, Developmental Disability Basics)
Across the country, children wait more than 13 weeks for some pediatric specialty appointments, and 20 weeks or more for certain ones, according to the Children's Hospital Association (March 2026). As of October 2026, Therapy Clubhouse has no waiting list for in-home or telehealth therapy.
Do I need a diagnosis or a doctor's referral first?
No. You do not need either to book a consultation or a private evaluation. Some insurance plans want a referral or diagnosis before they will pay you back. It is worth checking. We are glad to help you understand what your plan needs before anything begins.
Does insurance cover the evaluation, and how much does it cost?
Coverage depends on your plan. You can use your insurance through our partner, Village, which handles the billing. Village accepts PPO plans from several major insurers and TRICARE. Village also charges its own fee for each visit, in addition to your copay or deductible. Before therapy starts, Village goes over the expected cost with you. Therapy Clubhouse is working toward its own credentialing; until then, Village is how insurance works with us. You can also pay privately, and we give you a superbill to send to your plan for possible out-of-network reimbursement. How do I prepare my child?
Keep it simple and positive. Let your child know a friendly grown-up is coming to play. Have any prior reports and your insurance details handy, and jot down your top few concerns. If we are meeting at home or by telehealth, a quiet, familiar space helps your child show their best. Bring glasses or hearing aids if your child uses them, and try to schedule around naps and meals so your child is rested rather than stretched.
What happens after the evaluation?
You get your child's results in a written report. If therapy is recommended, a therapy plan comes with it, and we set up a schedule that fits your family. You are welcome to share the written summary with your pediatrician or your child's school. If your child does not need therapy right now, we tell you that honestly. We may add a few strategies and suggest checking back in a few months.
