Who treats your child
Your child is treated by one of two clinicians, and whoever evaluates your child is whoever treats your child.
Occupational therapist, USC trained, NBCOT certified, California licensed, with USC sensory integration training. Rachel covers handwriting and fine motor skill, sensory processing, coordination, dressing and feeding independence, and classroom readiness.
Both work in person in our home-visit area and by telehealth anywhere in California. Read their full bios.
Tarzana schools and what a district assessment tests
Public campuses here are Los Angeles Unified, including Tarzana Elementary.
A district assessment answers whether a difficulty affects education, a legal test. A private evaluation answers whether therapy would help, a clinical one. The two answers can differ, and the private report is yours to use.
A difficulty can first show up in the preschool years. A two year old whose words have stopped arriving. A three year old nobody outside the family can understand. A four year old who cannot tolerate the texture of paint or the noise of the yard. A preschool teacher may be the first person to say something out loud. If that has just happened to you, this is a good moment to ask a question rather than wait a year.
There is also a handoff worth knowing. Children under three who qualify can get Early Start through the regional center that serves your address. At the third birthday, responsibility shifts toward the district.
For school-age children in independent and parochial schools, federal law still requires each public school district to locate, identify, and evaluate children with disabilities whose parents enroll them in private schools in its area. A private evaluation is a separate choice. The question to ask is whether it would tell you something useful about your child.
The regional center that serves Tarzana is North Los Angeles County Regional Center in Chatsworth. Assignment follows health district rather than city line, so verify your address on the state DDS lookup. Important: we are a Tri-Counties Regional Center provider, and Tri-Counties covers Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties rather than Los Angeles County. That means families here use insurance through Village or pay privately with us. We would rather tell you this upfront than after an evaluation. See Regional Center and early intervention.
When each format wins
Articulation practice, vocabulary, sentence building, fluency. These can work well over video.
Hand strength, dressing, mealtime posture, balance. A camera cannot feel resistance or steady a wrist. In person wins and we will say so.
A plan may call for two sessions a week. On the free call, ask which mix of home and video visits fits your week.
Privacy matters at fourteen. An older child may engage more from their own room.
Your child must be physically in California during any session. That is licensure, not preference. How our telehealth works.
Fees and what we do not do
Insurance can be used through Village. You can also pay privately, and we give you a superbill. Payment options. Outside our practice: applied behavior analysis, complex swallowing problems, psychological care, adult clients. Those get referred to people who do them properly.
