Maybe your child sits on the bench while other kids climb and swing. Or maybe a teacher brought up OT because of pencil grip or a hard time sitting still. Pediatric occupational therapy in Port Hueneme can start at home. Occupational therapy, called OT for short, helps a child with hand skills, body control, the senses, and self-care. Each session looks like play, with a licensed OT guiding it. No diagnosis or referral is needed.
OT at our Port Hueneme home: is that possible?
Yes. We visit homes in Port Hueneme, and video sessions are an option too. Your family can switch between the two at any time.
Sessions at school can also be arranged. That includes public and private schools along with preschools and daycares. The process: written consent from you and a yes from the school. Our team then settles a time with school staff and looks over the room.
The City of Port Hueneme's Schools page lists McAuliffe Elementary School, at 3300 W Via Marina in Oxnard. If your child attends it, a visit there would need the same two steps.
Rather have the evaluation at an office? Ask, and we arrange it in a private office on Townsgate Road, Westlake Village. Our new clinic, at 2535 Townsgate Road, welcomes families starting December 1, 2026, with 8 treatment rooms. During OT evaluations there, the soft play area (1,000 square feet) is also available.
OT questions from Port Hueneme?
Tell us about the part of the day that feels hardest. A licensed therapist reads what you send, and you get an answer within one business day. Even a short note is enough.
Whichever setting suits your child in Port Hueneme: home, video, or school when you and the school both say yes.
Which everyday skills does pediatric occupational therapy in Port Hueneme work on?
Hand skills and handwriting, coordination, handling sound and touch, self-care, and feeding. Big feelings and hard transitions also get attention.
Hand control for pencils, scissors, zippers, and buttons is the job of handwriting and fine motor therapy. When skills arrive later than expected, developmental delay therapy works on them. Sensory integration therapy may fit a child who reacts strongly to sound, touch, or movement, either by avoiding it or by craving more. Feeding therapy can be part of OT too; the evaluation decides whether OT or speech leads it.
Copying dotted lines, drawing within lines, and sketching are some tasks a handwriting plan might use. What goes in depends on age and the evaluation. Every plan also includes parent coaching.
What special education help does Hueneme Elementary School District describe?
The district says it has a continuum (a range) of special education options for students identified as having special needs. It also says related services are available when they are deemed necessary.
Ask your child's school team which related services they offer.
Private OT can run alongside school services; sign a consent form and we will stay in contact with the school. Our OT program is led by co-founder Rachel Yashouafar, MA, OTR/L. OTR/L means nationally registered and licensed by the state.
Where can Port Hueneme kids climb and play?
The City of Port Hueneme lists children's play equipment at Bubbling Springs, Moranda Park, and Bolker Park.
Bubbling Springs is the biggest of the three, at 21 acres. The City calls it both a neighborhood park and the home of Port Hueneme Little League. Its listed facilities include a t-ball field and a walking path with workout stations. There are also two multi-use fields for 6U and 8U play, plus large open grass areas.
Moranda Park covers 8 acres, which the City says are devoted to active and structured activities. Bolker Park is a 4-acre neighborhood park with picnic tables and an open grass area, reached by Bolker Drive from West Channel Islands Boulevard.
If climbing a ladder or crossing a play structure looks hard for your child, bring it up when we talk.
Can city classes adjust for a child with a disability?
The City of Port Hueneme says it will make all reasonable modifications to its policies and programs. The goal, it says, is an equal chance for people with disabilities to enjoy its programs, services, and activities.
Need an aid or a change? The City asks you to contact its ADA Coordinator as soon as possible, and at least 48 hours before the event.
In October 2026, the page for the Orvene S. Carpenter Community Center said the City offers yoga, gymnastics, taekwondo, and a variety of classes for tots, teens, and adults. The center also has a children's play area.
If a class looks hard for your child right now, tell us about it on the free call.
How soon could OT begin for a Port Hueneme child?
A first session may come as soon as five days after your call. Evaluations happen inside three business days of the free consultation, when one is needed.
OT can start before the written report is done. If the evaluation needs to happen faster, a rush is possible on request. At the latest, the written report arrives 14 business days after the evaluation; when OT is recommended, a therapy plan joins it. Set aside 60 to 90 minutes for the evaluation itself. As of October 2026, families in Port Hueneme can begin OT at home or by video without a waiting list.
How can a Port Hueneme family pay for OT?
Your plan may work through our partner Village. You can also pay privately and receive a superbill. A qualifying child under 3 has one more path: Early Start, through Tri-Counties Regional Center.
Village takes TRICARE, and several major insurers' PPO plans work through it as well. Each visit also carries a Village fee, plus whatever copay or deductible your plan has. Paying on your own? We hand you a superbill, which you may send to your insurer. Our insurance through Village page explains the partnership; the payment options page lists every route.
We are an Early Start provider for Tri-Counties Regional Center. Its area spans three counties: Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo.
Port Hueneme OT questions
Are therapists background-checked?
Yes. Every therapist has been cleared through Live Scan, a background check run by the DOJ and the FBI.
Can sensory work happen over video?
Yes, with a parent's help. The methods depend on your child's age.
When does OT end?
Each plan spells out graduation goals: skills that, once reached, would show OT is no longer needed. Graduating is the aim we set for every child, and we do not keep a child in OT who no longer needs it.
OT also reaches families in Oxnard and Ventura. Speech therapy in Port Hueneme has its own page, and the Port Hueneme page covers both services.
