Pediatric occupational therapy in Porter Ranch, from crayons to shoelaces
Scissors, zippers, playground ladders, and big reactions to loud rooms or itchy tags are everyday OT territory. An occupational therapist can work with your Porter Ranch child in your home, in a classroom, or over a webcam.

Maybe coloring time ends with a snapped crayon and a cross kindergartner. Or maybe your pediatrician mentioned OT at the last checkup. Pediatric occupational therapy in Porter Ranch can start right in your family room. In OT, a child works on the skills behind daily life. That means using the hands, keeping balance, getting dressed, eating, and handling sights, sounds, and textures. It looks like play. Parents get simple ideas to try with their kids. No diagnosis or referral is needed.
Home sessions in Porter Ranch: can the OT come to us?
Yes. We visit homes in Porter Ranch, and school or video sessions are options, too.
School-based sessions, including preschool and daycare, begin with two steps: your written consent and the school's yes. After that, our team picks a time with the staff and checks that the space suits a session. Switching between home visits and video is fine at any point.
Ask, and the evaluation can be done in a private Westlake Village office, located on Townsgate Road. Our own clinic, at 2535 Townsgate Road, will open December 1, 2026, and will have 8 treatment rooms. After it opens, OT evaluations there may also use the soft play area, which is 1,000 square feet.

Zippers to handwriting: Porter Ranch home, school, and video OT.
What skills does pediatric occupational therapy in Porter Ranch focus on?
Hands and fingers, balance and coordination, self-care like getting dressed, and how the body takes in sensations.
In handwriting and fine motor therapy, a child builds grip and hand control for writing, scissors, and buttons. A handwriting plan might use sketching, copying dotted lines, or drawing within lines. The mix depends on the child's age and the evaluation's findings.
Some sensations can feel like too much for a child, or not enough. Sensory integration therapy works on both. Developmental delay therapy looks at motor or self-care skills that show up late. Feeding therapy is something an OT can lead, too.
Where can Porter Ranch kids play and hike nearby?
At city parks such as Porter Ridge Park and Limekiln Canyon Park. Porter Ridge Park's city page lists outdoor basketball courts, picnic tables, and barbecue pits.
Limekiln Canyon Park, at 19585 Rinaldi Street in ZIP code 91326, lists a hiking trail, a jogging path, a bridle trail, and picnic tables.
If playground time or a walk on a trail is tough for your child, mention it on the free call.
How can Porter Ranch parents get ready for an IEP?
One place to start: Porter Ranch Community School's Special Education page. It lists guides such as “IEP And You” and “A Parent's Guide to Special Education Services,” plus Spanish versions.
The school describes itself as a TK to 8 span school. LAUSD Region North lists it in its Canoga Park / Chatsworth Network.
Under an IEP, a school provides therapy tied to educational goals. Private OT doesn't replace that, and it can run alongside it. With your written okay, we can coordinate with the school team.
What public support is there for young Porter Ranch children?
Early Start, through North Los Angeles County Regional Center (NLACRC), can include OT. Its brochure lists occupational therapy among the most common services for children from birth to 3. Speech and language services and physical therapy are on that list too.
For ages 2 to 4, LAUSD runs the California State Preschool Program. The district's early childhood division says it is low-cost or free, in classes at select elementary schools. Ask the district which schools have it.
NLACRC's school-age page covers children it serves from 3 to 14. It says an assigned Consumer Service Coordinator leads a talk about the child's strengths, development, and areas of need. The coordinator then identifies services and supports.
Private OT with us stays separate from NLACRC. Here, families choose between insurance through Village and private pay.
When could my child's first OT session be?
Five days after your first call is the earliest. If an evaluation is needed, it takes place by business day 3 after the free consultation.
That first session can happen before the written report is ready. If the evaluation cannot wait, ask us to rush it. The written report comes within 14 business days, counted from the evaluation. When therapy is recommended, it includes a therapy plan. No waiting list holds up OT at home or by video, as of October 2026.
Our occupational therapy runs under Rachel Yashouafar, MA, OTR/L. Her school-based OT work includes one year in LAUSD schools, through a contracted company. She is also a co-founder.
Will our insurance help pay for OT in Porter Ranch?
Possibly. Our partner Village handles the insurance side, and what is covered depends on your plan. Private pay is the other option.
Village charges its own fee per visit. It handles TRICARE, and it handles PPO plans from several major insurers. Paying privately? A superbill comes with it, ready for your insurer. Our list of payment options and our page about insurance through Village explain more.
OT questions we hear from Porter Ranch
What if my child won't cooperate during the evaluation?
Then we stop and try again at another time. A hard day is never a reason for a child to feel they did something wrong.
What do we need to have ready for an OT evaluation?
The therapist brings the materials. The one exception is a feeding evaluation, where you may be asked to prepare certain foods.
Can my child have both OT and speech therapy?
Yes. Both are offered here, and the speech therapist and the OT plan together with you, so there is one shared plan.
Our OT also reaches Chatsworth, Northridge, and Granada Hills. Porter Ranch families can choose speech therapy as well, and the Porter Ranch page covers both.
